To add tags to a new post, go to your blog’s admin area > Posts > Add New. When you write your new post, add a tag to it by typing the tag word in the Tags field on the right and click on Add. You can add as many tags as you want.
WordPress itself doesn’t have any limit on the number of tags you can have on each post. You could potentially assign 1,000 or more tags to a post! However, we definitely don’t recommend that. The purpose of tags is to help link related posts together.
Tags provide a useful way to group related posts together and to quickly tell readers what a post is about. Tags also make it easier for people to find your content. Tags are similar to categories, but they are generally used to describe your post in more detail. The use of tags is completely optional.
Here are some of the steps I take to keep my WordPress tags SEO-friendly.
- Distinguish Between Categories And Tags. Creating a category and a tag for the same term is usually a bad idea.
- Noindex Your Tag Archives.
- Only Use Tags If You Need Them.
This advice comes from Syed at WPBeginner: “We say add no more than 10 tags to your posts unless you can justify it.” This advice comes from Tom at ManageWP: “A post should typically be in no more than one or two categories, and tagging should be limited only to the most relevant topics covered in the post.”
Categories are best used for broad groupings of topics. For example, if you’re creating a site that reviews media, you might use categories such as Books or Film or TV. Tags are much more specific topics that you want to use to associate related content.
Your category and tag archives are essential for SEO. In fact, especially for eCommerce sites, they can be more important than individual pages and posts. Those archives should be the first result in the search engines; they’re landing pages. They should therefore also provide the best user experience.
If you have a blog on your WordPress site, you can label the posts with different categories and tags. These are ways to sort the articles into taxonomies, so people can find more articles on the same topic quickly and efficiently. WordPress tags have no effect on SEO, or the ranking of a given article.
How do I select a tag in WordPress?
The best way to choose your tags is by using the keywords from the keyword research that you did when writing the post. If you haven’t done keyword research, then look at the words or phrases from your post and pick the terms that describe it the best. Also, look for terms that are unique to the post.
Following are the simple steps to Edit Tags in WordPress. Step (1) − Click on Posts → Tags in WordPress. Edit − Click on Edit option in Tags section as shown in the following screen. You can edit any of the required field, and then click on Update button as shown in the following screen.
What is TAG base in WordPress?
The base for categories and tags on WordPress is the part of the URL that is present right with the category name. Let’s take a simple example with the URL of the following website: https://mysite.com/categories/travel. You have your domain name, then the base which is here /categories, with as category travel.
On any existing page, click on the Settings button and select the Document tab. You will now see a Categories and Tag option appear in the settings. Simply click on one of them and you will be presented with the same options as a post. Choose a category for your page.
Title tags should lead the user directly to what they’re looking for with little effort. If you’re using duplicate title tags, you’re not optimizing SEO for the best possible user experience. This can be detrimental to your SEO.
How do bloggers tag for SEO?
Here are some recommendations on how to do this.
- Think about and plan how you would like to organize your content.
- Be judicious in the number of tags you use.
- Make sure you are grouping content and not creating one-off tags.
- Don’t create tags or categories that are similar to the title of the post.
Use the big terms sparingly and preferably always with a niche tag. The categories you choose should be consistently popular topics, or growing general trends. Do not use tags that are redundant – you will get no value out of it. Revise your list once a month to make sure your words are fresh and relevant.
